Asplenium scolopendrium - hart's-tongue fern by Jo Edwards

Asplenium scolopendrium, commonly known as Hart’s-Tongue Fern, is an evergreen fern na-tive to Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. This species is known for its long, undivided, glossy green leaves. Traditionally, Asplenium scolopendrium has been used in herbal medi-cine for its astringent and soothing properties. It was historically brewed into teas or infusions to treat respiratory ailments, ease sore throats, and support digestive health. In folklore, the Hart’s-Tongue Fern has been associated with protection and healing. In medie-val Europe, it was believed to have magical properties, often used in remedies for wounds and illnesses.

Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
