Catharanthus roseus - Madagascan periwinkle by Sue Williams

Catharanthus roseus, commonly known as Madagascar Periwinkle, is a delicate yet powerful plant native to Madagascar. This evergreen plant is well known for its medicinal properties, particularly in modern medicine, where its alkaloids have been used to develop life-saving treatments for leukaemia and other cancers. Traditionally, it has been used in herbal remedies to treat diabetes, high blood pressure, and infections. The plant's leaves and flowers have also been brewed into teas or applied topically to support wound healing and overall well-being. In folklore, Madagascar Periwinkle has been associated with protection, vitality, and good fortune. Some cultures have regarded it as a sacred plant, believing it to have magical or purifying properties.

Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
