Origanum dictamnus - Dittany by Gillian Barlow

Origanum dictamnus, commonly known as Dittany of Crete, is a rare and aromatic herb native to Crete. It is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and digestive benefits, often brewed into teas to soothe colds, stomach ailments and wounds. In ancient Greece, it was considered a powerful healing herb, used to treat everything from snake bites to infections, and was even thought to promote love and fertility. In folklore, it was thought to have been a favourite of the goddess Aphrodite, symbolising love and passion. Legends also tell of wild goats in Crete instinctively seeking out the plant when wounded, as it was believed to have wound-healing properties.

Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
