Rosa canina - dog rose by Janet Callender

Rosa canina, commonly known as Dog Rose, is a wild rose species native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. This sprawling shrub is admired for its flowers and bright red rose hips. The rose hips have long been used in herbal medicine, particularly for their immune-boosting properties. They are commonly used to make teas, syrups, and jams, which are believed to support the immune system, improve skin health, and relieve mild inflammation. The petals and leaves have also been used in traditional remedies to soothe wounds, reduce menstrual cramps, and promote digestion. In folklore, the Dog Rose is often associated with love, protection, and renewal.

Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
