Prunus dulcis - almond by Joanna Craig-McFeely

Prunus dulcis, commonly known as the Almond tree, is a small, deciduous tree native to the Middle East and South Asia. Renowned for its nutrient-rich nuts, the almond has been cultivated for thousands of years for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The seeds are rich in healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, and are often used in traditional medicine to support heart health and digestion. Almond oil, extracted from the nuts, has long been prized for its moisturising properties, commonly used in skincare remedies for dry or irritated skin. In folklore, the Almond tree is often seen as a symbol of renewal, as it is one of the first trees to bloom in the spring. In ancient cultures, the tree was considered a symbol of fertility and protection.

Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
