Pelargonium ‘Splendide’ by Judith Hillelson

Pelargonium ‘Splendide’ is a variety known for its bright flowers and aromatic scent. Its leaves and stems are known to have mild antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, often used in folk medicine to treat minor skin irritations or to soothe the symptoms of colds. In folklore, Pelargonium ‘Splendide’ is associated with beauty, vitality, and good fortune.

Chelsea Physic Garden holds one of the UK’s most historic Pelargonium collections, with species first recorded here in 1724. In the 1980s, Professor Mary Gibby used this living collection to carry out pioneering research on chromosome variation and plant evolution, helping shape the modern classification of this diverse South African genus. The collection remains an important resource for scientists and plant lovers alike.
