Pelargonium ardens - Geranium by Judith Hillelson

Pelargonium ardens, is a hardy plant native to South Africa. This species is often grown for both ornamental and medicinal purposes. In traditional herbal medicine, the leaves of Pelargonium ardens have been used for their soothing and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used to treat ailments such as colds, respiratory issues, and minor skin irritations. In folklore, the Geranium family, including Pelargonium ardens, is often associated with protection and good fortune.

Chelsea Physic Garden holds one of the UK’s most historic Pelargonium collections, with species first recorded here in 1724. In the 1980s, Professor Mary Gibby used this living collection to carry out pioneering research on chromosome variation and plant evolution, helping shape the modern classification of this diverse South African genus. The collection remains an important resource for scientists and plant lovers alike.
