Liquidambar orientalis - Oriental sweet gum by Lesley Catchpole
Liquidambar orientalis (Oriental Sweetgum) is celebrated for both its medicinal properties and its role in folklore. The tree’s resin, known as storax, has long been used in traditional medicine. It is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties, often used to treat wounds, skin conditions, and respiratory issues. Storax was also a key ingredient in syrups for easing coughs and sore throats. In folklore, the resin has been burned as incense in spiritual and religious practices, believed to purify spaces and protect against negative energies.
