Penstemon heterophyllus 'Heavenly Blue' - foothill beardtongue by Peggy Dawe

Penstemon heterophyllus 'Heavenly Blue' has iridescent blue-violet blooms and is beloved by pollinators and gardeners alike. This hardy perennial thrives in dry, sunny landscapes and is often viewed as a symbol of resilience. Some Native American communities used related species for soothing sore throats and res-piratory ailments, inspired by the plant’s tubular, throat-like flowers. Today, Penstemon heter-ophyllus is primarily celebrated as a vital nectar source for pollinators, playing a key role in sustaining biodiversity.

Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
