Geranium malviflorum - mallow-flowered cranesbill by Alison F. Brown

Geranium malviflorum is a member of the geranium family, native to Mediterranean regions. In herbal lore, geraniums have been used for their astringent and anti-inflammatory qualities. Infusions of their leaves were once believed to soothe wounds and skin conditions, while their roots were sometimes used in tonics to support digestive health. Geraniums also hold a place in folklore as protectors of the home. In some traditions, planting geraniums near doorways was thought to ward off negativity and promote harmony. They are also connected to the Goddess Aphrodite and thought to help with conception.

Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
