Dryopteris felix-mas - male fern by Eiko Takano
Dryopteris felix-mas, commonly known as the Male Fern, is a deciduous fern native to Europe, Asia, and parts of North America. Traditionally, its rhizomes have been used in herbal medi-cine, particularly for their purgative and anthelmintic properties. In the past, Dryopteris felix-mas was commonly used to expel intestinal worms, a practice that dates back to ancient times. Some cultures also used it as a remedy for skin conditions, such as wounds and ulcers, by applying poultices made from the fronds.
The plant was often believed to have protective properties, particularly against evil spirits or negative energies.
Chelsea Physic Garden has been a centre of medicinal plant knowledge for over 350 years. Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. Its living collection includes species from across the globe, many with histories deeply rooted in medicinal and cultural practice. Today, the Garden continues to inspire learning, offering a space for people to connect with nature and explore the essential role plants play in our health, culture, and survival.
